How you can help a child
- Don't know what to say?
- How do I answer my child's question?
- What about the funeral?
It's common to have lots of questions and sometimes there's no right or wrong answer, but below are some of the suggestions that would be a guide in helping you communicate with your child following a bereavement.
- Be as truthful as you can about the death;
- Give them the choice about attending the funeral to allow them to ask the person conducting the funeral questions;
- Allow them an opportunity to take part in the funeral, in their own way (i.e. releasing a balloon);
- Children, like adults, will grieve in their own way. Be patient and offer comfort and support when they need it;
- Let them talk about the person who has died.
